"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Winston Churchill

There are three things that each person on the spiritual path is encouraged to cultivate: generosity, ethical living, and contemplative life. The Buddha was very clear that generosity - the act of giving – is the most important of all.
Mindfulness begins with generosity. It is the very first step we take on our path to happiness and freedom. Why? Because giving is an act of compassion, of sharing. To give something is to open your mind and heart fully. It can be something simple: Mother Theresa said, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed one.”
Sometimes you might hesitate to give because you are afraid, or have second thoughts. Trust your first thought, when you have a generous impulse! When you give something away, you cut through the habit of attachment. Possessive attachment, endless wanting, is one of the biggest obstacles to peace of mind.
By practicing mindfulness, we discover how generosity and connection can be cultivated, moment by moment. This is how we can free ourselves from the isolation of anxiety, stress, and loneliness, and — step by step -- walk a compassionate path of peace and community.
