(5 Thursday Nights)
at Santa Monica Main Center, (1430 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica, CA, 90404)
Chance are if you read this class description that you have a hunch that surrendering to something in your life – or to surrender to your life – might be a better alternative to what you have been doing so far.
Surrender is not necessarily a word with positive associations. It can have the smell of giving up, of weakness or indifference. It is the acknowledgment of lacking control over or being able to change what is happening right now.
Even considering surrendering to a situation can be quite anxiety provoking. So you rather keep fighting. But that can become so relentless and so tiring. And what for? A part of you might yearn for permission to finally just stop, to put the weapons down, to go home and take a nap.
Or maybe you intellectually understand that surrender would be helpful but you have no idea how to actually do that.
Surrender is an art form, which takes a lot of courage, love and practice – and the caring support of a group. Part of the art is knowing when to persevere and when to stop. I believe that the art of surrender is a life skill, which will serve us really well for the rest of our life.
Let’s sit down together and look at the idea and practice of surrendering from different angles. Then let’s go home, put it into practice during the week and see what happens. And repeat for five weeks.
This class is an intermediate level class. Basic understanding of what mindfulness is and the capacity to practice a guided meditation for 30min are prerequisites. Having taken Basics of Mindfulness or MBSR is helpful.
Part of the home assignment will be a daily meditation practice (guided or unguided) for 30min.
There will be no class on Thursday November 23rd.
