(6 Sunday evenings )
at Santa Monica Annex, (1826 14th Street, Santa Monica, CA, 90404)
Buddhist lore has it that as a young prince the Buddha, upon first leaving the compounds of his palace, saw the plight of a sick person, an aged person, and a corpse. He then saw a wondering ascetic. These four "Heavenly Messengers" were a prompt for the Buddha to find a path to awakening.
The Heavenly Messengers class draws on the Buddhist practice of approaching illness, aging, and death as a tool for awakening and greater freedom. The natural progression of aging, sickness and death are an invitation for you to wake up to what "matters most".
We invite you to join this 6 week exploration of how you can prepare, both practically and spiritually, for these experiences. An honest encounter with these facts of human existence can serve as a catalyst for profound transformation.
This class includes Dharma teachings, small group inquiry and discussions, meditation and other practices.
In the class you will:
- Learn how embracing aging, illness and death can lead to a fully engaged life characterized by wisdom and compassion
- Learn contemporary approaches and skillful means to address the practical, emotional, and spiritual issues inherent in facing illness, aging, and dying.
- Study teachings and engage in practices that help develop an awakened mind and heart.
This class is open to practitioners of all levels.
