at Santa Monica Annex, (1826 14th Street, Santa Monica, CA, 90404)
Please join Senior Teacher Alisa Dennis and Zen Teacher Ava Stanton for a daylong retreat of silent sitting and walking, alternating with self-reflective writing, short Dharma Talks, time for questions and optional small group reflection.
Alisa and Ava want to share their love of self-compassion practices in a space where you can be held for a day of simplifying and responding to what your heart needs.
Often we think of self-compassion for our inner critic, or other inner barriers to being clear and present. Indeed, we may have missed opportunities because of fear or low self worth, and self compassion is essential in that healing process.
Outer barriers require our self-compassion too. The impact of historical and present-day oppression is real. Such forces affect our sense of emotional and physical safety.
Our society privileges some people and disenfranchises others based on race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, education, income, citizenship status, and body ability and stereotyping. Constant exposure to these outer barriers can bring up fear, rage, shame, hopelessness, powerlessness, grief, loss, or feelings of invisibility or hyper-visibility. These feelings are gateways to self-compassion.
Offering ourselves compassion for the wounding we may feel as a result of cultural pain is vital for our personal and collective healing. The teachers will each share a bit of their personal experience with oppression and/or privilege and the role self-compassion has played in their lives.
Our intention for our daylong is to offer a safe space to feel, and continue to heal, with deep respect for our own journeys. Allies welcome.
