(8 Wednesday Evenings)
at Santa Monica Meditation Center, (1430 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica, CA, 90404)
Join InsightLA Senior Teacher Beth Sternlieb in exploring the skillful use of wisdom that can lead to liberation according to the Buddha's teachings.
The Buddha taught that mindfulness and investigation are essential in the development of liberating wisdom. His great text on mindfulness, The Satipatthana Sutta ends with five practice lists that give step by step instruction for developing clarity, profound seeing and wisdom.
We will be exploring and familiarizing ourselves with these lists through meditation, teachings and discussions so that our practice opens to its full potential.
The lists include:
The Five Hindrances – sense-desire, ill-will, sloth and torpor, restlessness and worry, doubt
The Five Aggregates – form, feeling, perception, mental-formations, consciousness
The Six Sense-Bases – eye and form, ear and sound, nose and odor, tongue and flavor, body and touch, mind and idea
The Seven Factors of Enlightenment – investigation, energy, joy, mindfulness, tranquility, concentration, equanimity
The Four Noble Truths – suffering, the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering, the Noble Eightfold Path
If you would like a book to support your understanding of the material covered in this class, recommended but not required is:
THE FOUR FOUNDATIONS OF MINDFULNESS IN PLAIN ENGLISH by Bhante Gunaratana
This class is a Dana based class. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Dana means giving. The suggested donation for this class series, which includes 8 classes, is $240 dollars.
$30 per person of an average size class at InsightLA covers the cost of paying teachers, administrators, rent and outreach, as well as covering the participation of students who will pay less.
Please give generously. Your act of generosity is significant. The Buddha taught that all of the beautiful qualities of heart and mind begin with generosity: Generosity dissolves the separation of self and other… Giver receiver and gift intertwined. Everyone has a role to play in supporting the whole community practicing to their fullest potential.
At InsightLA, we’re dedicated to creating a safe and welcome, open and equitable community that stands firmly against all racial, gender, economic, or religious bias.
