Faith is about having confidence and being open to new ideas. Faith becomes conviction when you actually see and experience faith at work. This, in turn, motivates you to move forward and fosters a strong belief in self-efficacy; you believe that no matter what happens, you can handle it.
For a team, that means moving away from a motivation such as “let’s work together to destroy our opponents” to “let’s work together and do this wonderful stuff we love and get into flow.”
Wanting to beat the other team, or to go faster or throw better than someone, can be a great initial motivation, but it will wear out quickly and eventually wear you down, because there’s always someone else to beat. If you stay focused on tearing something down instead of building it up, you won’t end up feeling great because you’ll simply be consumed by hatred, anger, contempt, or other emotions that lead to distress.
Right effort and right motivation focus our energy on “we,” not “me.” Once we’re clear on this and we can walk the talk, the team becomes, as Phil Jackson once said, like “five fingers on a hand.”
This is the case for any kind of team, athletic or otherwise. It’s all about bringing a certain positive quality of energy to the table in every area of our lives, no matter where we are or who we’re with. The real question is this: Can you bring into your life, both on and off the court, the love of the game, the love of being present, the love of being all that you can be, the love of being of service, the love of taking your humanity to another level?
George Mumford has worked with Jackson and many of the teams he coached to become NBA champions, as well as players such as Michael Jordan, Shaq, and Kobe Bryant. His roster of champion clients has since blossomed way beyond basketball to include corporate executives, Olympians, and athletes in many different sports.
