(6 Thursday Evenings )
at Santa Monica Meditation Center, (1430 Olympic Blvd., Santa Monica, CA, 90404)
Most of us have a complicated relationship with our body – to say the least.
Do you like your body? Parts of it? None of it? Do you feel at home in your body? Are you at ease? Are you moving in a not self-conscious way? Are you in close communication with your body and do you understand its language? Are you listening to its needs for safety, sleep, food, movement and sexual pleasure? Are you an advocate for your body?
Growing up in a culture that objectifies the female body and constantly judges it has left a deep mark on all of us. And then life adds its catastrophes, traumas and unleashes the old Buddhist triad of aging, sickness and death onto the body. Yet this is the only body we have and we are living with it 24/7. Can we look at some of the things we have come to believe about bodies in general and this one in particular? Are they still serving us?
In this class we want to start exploring in a safe way how we are relating to our body and what gets in the way of our friendship with the body.
Mindfulness and compassion practice gives us the tools to start relating to the body in a new way.
This class is for anyone who identifies as a woman. Basic understanding of mindfulness and loving kindness practice are necessary to gain the most from this class. We recommend you having taken an Introduction to Mindfulness class or an MBSR class. This class will draw on teachings of Western and of Buddhist psychology.
We will practice guided meditations, share in small groups and in the big group, as well as use guided reflections and journaling. Class doors will open at 6:50pm and there will be music for dancing or settling until 7:15. At 7:15pm we will settle into a silent opening meditation without music.
NOTE: There are 6 classes in this series on Thursday evenings from November 8th - December 20th. There will be no class on Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd.
