1/16/2019 4:00 PM - 1/21/2019 1:00 PM  at  Royal Way Spiritual Retreat Center, (8088 High Rd, Lucerne Valley, CA, 92356) (Map It)

Join InsightLA Senior teachers Spring Washam and Beth Sternlieb along with teacher Gullu Singh for this very special 5-night retreat at the beautiful and serene Royal Way Spiritual Center.

During this silent retreat we will explore how the Buddha's teachings offer a path to inner peace, freedom and the compassionate heart. Awareness as developed through mindfulness practice and love (Metta) are the essential ingredients to any spiritual life. Awareness leads to clarity, insight and understanding. Love opens the heart, allows a kind embrace of ourselves and connects us intimately with all of life. The fusion of love and mindfulness supports a compassionate response to the pain that we encounter in ourselves and in life.

In this retreat of meditation practice we will discover how these qualities are intimately related and mutually supportive and why they are necessary in any journey of awakening in learning to live wisely and kindly in the world. We will draw guidance from the teachings and practices of the Buddha and inspiration from the life of Martin Luther King who beautifully expressed in his words and actions the power of compassion and its response to suffering and injustice in the world.

This retreat will include comprehensive meditation instruction for sitting and movement meditation, as well as talks, group discussions and mindful movement. Suitable for beginning and experienced students. Time in retreat allows us to step out of the complexity of our life, to listen deeply to our body, heart and mind.

Retreatants are encouraged to practice mindfulness in a continuous way, staying with their own present experience as it unfolds, moment to moment. In this silent and mindful environment, awareness sharpens, the body quiets, the mind clears, and space opens for insight and understanding to develop.  Three healthy vegetarian meals are provided for participants and dietary restrictions are accommodated to whenever possible.

Retreat Schedule:

The daily rhythm of a retreat usually involves alternating periods of sitting and movement meditation, nature walks, meals and tea, as well as practice meetings, dharma talks and rest periods. The first sitting usually begins before breakfast. Each morning the teachers offer continuing meditation instructions for the day. The whole retreat is a succession of mindfulness training, breathing practices, deep awareness of the body and environment, meditations on the nature of feelings, and awareness of mind are from the Buddhist Insight Meditation tradition.

Sitting Meditation:  Sitting meditation is at the heart of silent retreats. In sitting practice silence and stillness develop, concentration deepens, and awareness expands. The training of the heart brings kindness and compassion for all that arises. We come into presence and learn to find freedom in the midst of life that as it truly is.

Moving Meditation: Moving intentionally and wisely on the earth is also a way to practice meditation. On retreat, periods of movement meditation alternate with periods of sitting meditation. Through movement practice, we learn to sustain meditative awareness through movement. In movement meditation, we become aware in the midst of activity. Throughout the retreat we learn to cultivate a mindful awareness in all postures, sitting moving and lying down.

Eating Meditation:
An awareness of food, and the mindful understanding of the entire process of nourishment and eating is included in the practice at retreats. Retreatants are encouraged to bring the same calm, focused attention to eating as is brought to sitting and movement. Mindful eating is a wonderful context for the arising of insights. Every bite of food we eat contains, rain, sun, earth and the work of many, many beings.

Dharma Talks and guided meditations:  Each day, the teachers present a different set of teachings that are central to practicing mindfulness and compassion. These teaching can be applied to our own experience. Sometimes the talks focus on retreat practice, and sometimes they offer teachings for wise living in the world.
