A Residential Retreat for those in Recovery

In our Tuesday newsletter, our Executive Director Mark Koberg shared bit about his experience losing a loved one to addiction. (Read below) Thank you for sharing Mark.

This past September, in the early morning San Francisco fog, my family and I scattered my eldest brother Rob’s ashes, in the Pacific Ocean, near the Golden Gate Bridge. The Bay Area was Rob’s home off an on for the last 20 years.

Rob fought alcoholism most of his adult life. It ended up ruining everything for him, his career, his marriage and this past year it nearly broke our family. Rob died alone while detoxing on his own this past August.

After we said our goodbyes, the boat headed back to the marina and the fog lifted and revealed the bright sun and clear blue skies that are always there. Sometimes hidden, but none-the-less there. Sadly, Rob wasn’t able to see through the foggy density of his illness to know this was true for him as well.

In December, at InsightLA we’re hosting a 4 night recovery-based meditation retreat at the Big Bear Retreat Center in Southern California. In Rob’s honor, the InsightLA community has raised money for financial support for those who want to attend but can’t afford the cost. This funding is in addition to the 20% of “pay what you can” spots that we now offer on all of our fee-based programs.

The retreat is being led by Valerie (Vimalasara) Mason-John and assisted by InsightLA teacher Diana Gould. Valerie has been practicing mindfulness for over 30 years and is one of the leading African-descent voices in the field of mindfulness and addiction.

My hope is that anyone who is interested in this retreat is able to attend and that this offering will benefit those in need. **To register, please click here. **

Mark Koberg
