The Buddha is often referred to as a physician. In the Four Noble Truths, he diagnosed
- The disease: dukkha – often translated as “suffering,” but really referring to a wide range of difficult, unpleasant, distressing phenomena
- The cause: clinging, grasping, holding on – ie. wanting things to be different
- The prognosis: the possibility of end of dukkha.
He also gave the prescription. That prescription is the Fourth Noble Truth, or the Eight Fold Path.
The prescription offers the possibility of peace, relief, release. The folds of this path comprise a design for living that can be applied even to our complex, confusing and often overwhelming current circumstances.
This class will begin an exploration of this path, with examples, suggestions and discussion about how to apply these teachings to our lives today.
