“The opposite of deep suffering is not just the absence of suffering. The opposite of deep suffering is connection.”

Join Tuesday, December 7 @ 7:00-8:30pm (PST) for “Sitting With Suicide: Mindfulness, Deep Suffering, and Hope” with Special Guest: Jamie Gamboa, PsyD.

Suggested Donation: $0–$5 (your presence is donation enough!)

This event will be recorded in speaker mode only and emailed to everyone who registers. The Q&A and sharing portions will not be recorded.

We will discuss encouraging updates to our understanding of suicidal ideation and how to navigate conversations about suicide with family, friends, colleagues, and clients/students. There will be ample time for participants to ask questions and discuss this important issue.

Brian Stefan and Dr. Jamie Gamboa are founders of Spotlight on Suicide, an organization dedicated to educating the public about suicide, normalizing conversations about hopelessness, and fostering connection through mindfulness- and strengths-based approaches to suicide prevention.

Dr. Jamie Gamboa is a multi-culturally informed, sex-positive, LGBTQIA+-affirming, kink-affirming, and non-monogamy/polyamory affirming clinician at Framework Psychological Associates. She specializes in working with neurodiversity, trauma, and creative individuals. In addition to providing individual and couples therapy, she is the lead clinician for Framework’s group program. She runs an 8-week mindfulness-based cognitive therapy group for anxiety and depression as well as a 6-week psychoeducational group for ADHD.

Previously, Dr. Gamboa worked for 5 years as a supervisor and crisis counselor at Didi Hirsch’s suicide hotline, where she had the honor of being entrusted with a great many stories. Sometime after that, she lost a dear friend to suicide. Her professional and personal experiences taught her that while suicide and suicide loss are complicated, this is not the end of our story.

Brian is a grief therapist, proud social worker, suicide prevention professional, and co-founder and facilitator of InsightLA’s Weekly Mindfulness & Deep Suffering H.O.P.E. Practice Group (Healing Ourselves through the Present Experience). Join each Saturday @11:00am-12:30pm (PST). For more information, visit our page.

______________

We come together to meditate and talk about supporting the people in our lives (including ourselves) who may be struggling with deep suffering, hopelessness, helplessness, disconnection, mental health/health challenges, and/or suicidal thoughts.

We will discuss – and practice – the importance of connection, community, and compassion.

There will be a 15-20 minute guided meditation, followed by a teaching and time for conversation, discussion, and questions.

______________

As always, if you are considering giving up or if you know someone who might be at risk for suicide, please call 800-273-TALK (8255) and visit: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/

Since April 2020, the InsightLA Weekly Mindfulness & Deep Suffering H.O.P.E. Practice Group (Healing Ourselves through the Present Experience)  has been a refuge and sanctuary for those of us who feel lost at times, without judgement, shame, or pressure.
