Vipassana Meditation and Household Chores
Vipassana meditation is a method of cultivating and developing awareness, wisdom, and other good mental qualities like compassion, renunciation, flexibility, and so on. To develop these good qualities, we need practice. The more we practice, the more we develop these qualities.
At the beginning of our meditation practice, we start with a sitting position, then a walking position, then a lying position. We choose to start our meditation practice with these postures because they are simple. Sitting, walking or lying down involves minimal thinking or planning, making it easier for a meditative mind to develop and gain momentum.
Learning in a retreat or practice group setting, spending the majority of our time in sitting or walking meditation is idyllic. However, these aren’t typically the conditions of our daily lives.
In daily life, we have work and/or family, we need to get things done, we have to prepare food, we socialize, and so on. We do not have time for just sitting or walking as we do while on retreat. So, how do we balance daily life with the development of these good mental qualities? By cultivating awareness and wisdom in the midst of these daily activities.
