One of the most challenging areas to practice mindfulness, as well as one of the most rewarding is in relating to others. In this class series, we will be exploring the practices of relational mindfulness and wise speech as a means for inner and outer harmony, happiness, and a real deepening of our practice off the cushion.
Within the dimension of relational mindfulness, we will be learning and practicing together how to cultivate embodied presence: resting in the body as an anchor while we practice speaking and listening. We will explore how our own internal mindfulness practice of attuning to our inner experience can help us in attuning externally to others and deepen our communication and compassion.
In the realm of wise speech, each week we will explore a principle of the practice of wise speech the Buddha taught as part of an essential ingredient for awakening as found in the Noble Eightfold Path. How do we learn to speak in a way that is true, kind and non divisive, timely and useful? How can we practice having difficult conversations from a place that’s anchored in wisdom and love? We will have the chance to explore all of this together. There will be some mindful inquiry work involved as well as suggestions for taking the practice into your daily life each week.
This intermediate class is appropriate for those students with previous meditation experience who have taken an introductory mindfulness class or other Buddhist classes or Living Dharma series. In the Living Dharma class series, we study the traditional Buddhist teachings from the Insight meditation tradition and learn how to apply them to daily life for greater ease, clarity, and well being. There will be time for longer meditations, instruction, Dharma talks, small group work, reflections and discussion to deepen learning together in community.
Participants will be strongly encouraged to meditate for at least 30 minutes daily to support the deepening of their understanding.
Please note, this is a class series, not a drop-in group. Please sign up with the intention of attending as many sessions as possible to get the most out of class and to leave space open for other students who would like to commit to the full session.
If you know you will miss more than one class, please choose a drop-in group instead to leave this class series space open for other students who can commit to the full session as in person space will be limited.
