Join us this summer for a film series of classic Buddhist-themed films. followed by a brief discussion led by InsightLA teachers. Each of the evenings will begin with a short meditation, the feature film screening, followed by an opportunity to discuss led by an InsightLA teacher.
The feature film for this evening is “Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring” (South Korea, 2004). As the title suggests, the action takes place in five distinct episodes, but sometimes many years separate the chapters, as the story jumps forward in time. The setting is a floating monastery in a pristine mountain lake, where an elderly monk teaches a boy the lessons of life, though as the boy grows to manhood, we see there are some lessons that he, inevitably, must learn for himself. By the time the story reaches the last two chapters, you realize that you are watching the arc of human existence–not one person’s life, but everyone’s. While the film enchants as a Buddhist fable, the filmmaker does not shy away from the difficult truths of karma, and surprises with scenes of youthful sexuality, implied violence, and explosions of black comedy and rage, diffused by an arduous meditation on the lotus sutta.
