Kris Peterson

Kris Peterson is a graduate of InsightLA’s Meditation Facilitator program. She is also a yoga teacher, writer, and professor of anthropology at UC Irvine. Before becoming an academic, Kris worked in the Bay Area as a crisis counselor in homeless and battered women shelters. She was active in a variety of social justice issues and has facilitated anti-racist and anti- oppression trainings since 1993.

Now she incorporates that work in classes that weave together mindfulness meditation, increased body flexibility, and practices in individual, and societal trauma release. She is especially interested in secular Buddhist ethics and meditative heart practices – their potential for creating individual ease and joy, as well as liberating forms of collective consciousness. At the Melrose center, Kris guides drop-in sitting-groups, is part of the teacher rotation of the Queer Mindfulness group, and co-teaches Mindful Yin Yoga.
