Financial Support

Our mission is to make all of our programs accessible. Every fee-based offering has a limited number of pay-what-you-can spots available to support self-identified people of color, members of marginalized groups (queer people, transgender people, and  people with disabilities) and those in financial need (those for whom the cost to attend is not financially possible).

These spots are offered on a first come, first served basis. Please pay at the highest level you can afford. In order for this support to be available, we rely on those who can afford to pay the full price to do so.

Find out if spots are available by clicking REGISTER NOW on the event you are interested in.

Refund and Event Policies

Mindfulness-Based Ethical Living (MBEL) addresses the psychological, ethical and philosophical dimensions of the human experience. MBEL is an organized, contemplative system carefully designed for anyone who seeks to care for their own and others’ lives, here in this world. Developed for those who seek a philosophical and ethical context for their practice of mindfulness.

MBEL is founded on early Buddhist formulas and lists such as: four foundations of mindfulness, four tasks, four efforts and the four immeasurables. In the same way that mindfulness-based therapies such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) are inspired by Buddhist contemplative practices, MBEL draws inspiration from the ethical values and philosophical frameworks of early Buddhist thought. Although Buddhist in inspiration and origin, MBEL shares neither the religious and metaphysical commitments of the Buddhist religion nor its authoritarian hierarchies of power.

This program was developed by Stephen Batchelor as the culmination of over four decades of practicing, studying and teaching the Dharma. Stephen Batchelor sees himself as a facilitator rather than an authority in the development of MBEL.

MBEL has been conceived as a collaborative project, which leaves behind the patriarchal and hierarchic power structures often found in Buddhism. Authority is distributed throughout the community of practitioners rather than concentrated in an expert.

During this event Dave Smith will discuss the overview and history of MBEL, as well as offering periods of mindfulness practice and group discussion.

This program is appropriate for anyone interested in the topic, regardless of any previous experience.
