NOTE: Registrations for this event will close on Feb 6th 9:30am PT.
During times of extreme challenge, we all cope using whatever resources we have learned up to that point. When times push us to the limit of our resourcefulness, and our ability to protect ourselves, we can find ourselves contracting our bodies, hearts, and minds in order to survive. It can take tremendous courage to turn towards what we fear, and deeply contact our vulnerability. Paradoxically, this place of willingness to be vulnerable becomes the seat of even greater courage and openness, allowing us to expand into fearless and compassionate action.
Since this process of contracting becomes instantiated in our bodies when we feel threatened both individually and collectively, it is necessary to work with these patterns, which we call Stress Shapes, through our bodies, while receiving the support of others engaging in the work together with us. Using foundational internal and external practices from the Ashtanga Vinyasa system of Yoga, mindful awareness of our moment-to-moment experience, insights from Polyvagal Theory, and relational practices for Collective Liberation, we can move towards, into, and through the places where we find ourselves the most contracted, harvesting our natural intelligence and innate wisdom so that we can be of service to ourselves and others.
The daylong will include simple movement practices suited for all physical abilities, breathing practices, and dyadic and group practices.
- Upon completion of the daylong, participants will be able to:
- Describe elements of yoga philosophy and practice that provide a framework for understanding self-regulation (i.e. the ability to monitor and manage our responses to stressful situation)
- Explain how the autonomic nervous system underlies the human stress response from a physical, behavioral and emotional perspective
- Identify “Stress Shapes” (i.e. habitual response patterns to stressful situations) within themselves and other participants
- Discuss how individual stress response patterns are rooted in the collective experience of the environment and conditions in which we live
- Elucidate why healing is relational, and how we can access greater depths of healing when safety is reflected back to us by our social context
- Demonstrate the effective use of simple movement and breathing techniques to constructively navigate stressful situations
