“An optimist isn’t necessarily a blithe, slightly sappy whistler in the dark of our time. To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.”
― James Baraz, Awakening Joy: 10 Steps That Will Put You on the Road to Real Happiness
In this 4-week series this summer, based on the renowned Awakening Joy class created by James Baraz, we’ll be discovering all the wholesome, natural and tangible joys, always available in the present moment. It is often said that Buddhist practitioners are “joy seekers,” learning that these joys are always here for our enjoyment – just waiting to be discovered in the here and now. Buddhist practice wisely centers joy as essential for life balance, residency and liberation. Because these “everyday” joys can only be known and enjoyed in the present moment, we’ll spend time cultivating mindful embodied presence, literally coming to our senses as a path for wholesome joy. Also, because discovering joy depends on the quality of mind and heart, we’ll be cultivating wholesome heart qualities as the foundation for true joy.
Every week, we’ll dive together into qualities and practices that allow for joy as a natural way of life, such as gratitude, connection, self-compassion, kindness, generosity, as well as mining the “silver linings” often hiding in plain sight, even in challenging times like these. Each class will involve guided meditation, instruction, sharing and inclusive community-building, tailored to these uncertain times.
The time for joy is now!
