Join us for a transformative 4-week series exploring the fifth precept of Theravāda Buddhism through the lens of science and practice. Discover how alcohol and intoxicants impact our lives and learn practical ways to cultivate mindfulness and ethical conduct.

The fifth precept emphasizes abstaining from intoxicants that cloud the mind and lead to heedlessness (pamāda). In Theravāda Buddhism, mental clarity and mindfulness are central to ethical conduct and progress on the path to liberation. Consuming alcohol or other intoxicants impairs judgment, weakens moral restraint, and hinders meditation, potentially leading to violations of the other precepts (e.g., killing, stealing, lying, or sexual misconduct). The precept isn’t just about avoiding alcohol but extends to any substance that causes mental fog or recklessness, including recreational drugs. The focus is on maintaining awareness and control over one’s actions, aligning with the broader goal of cultivating sīla (ethical conduct).

In this course, we’ll dive into:

  • The science behind alcohol’s effects on the brain, body, and behavior.
  • Practical strategies for living mindfully and upholding the fifth precept.
  • Tools to navigate social and cultural challenges while staying sober.
  • Guided reflections to strengthen your commitment to ethical living and mental clarity.

Perfect for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike, Sober October offers a supportive space to deepen your understanding of the fifth precept and embrace a life of mindfulness.
