Even in the Buddha’s time, meditators were prone to doubts, boredom, irritation and getting lost in worries, fears, or fantasies.. The Buddha himself had to learn how to overcome these obstacles, which he termed “hindrances,” because they hinder the clear seeing that is the gateway to ease and freedom. These hindrances are so common to all meditators (this means you…and me. And the person sitting next to you in the hall, and his disciples, and all meditators throughout time) that he outlined ways to recognize and overcome them. In this 5-week class, we will look at the hindrances and all their varieties then learn practical steps we can take to work with them.
