This session will unpack the scientific understanding of burnout and reveal how we can learn to use the feelings and experience of stress and emotional overwhelm as a path to meaning based coping.
We will apply contemplative science tools for investigating the roots of burnout through its antidotes:
- Emotional Resilience,
- Meaning Making, and
- Gratitude.
The phenomenon of burnout arises from challenging conditions in our daily work, especially for care professionals, and can be generated/enhanced through our secondary experiences of collective stress, trauma, and emotion (there is plenty to go around these days). Burnout is defined and measured through three domains which are connected to how we are able to hold the content of our difficult emotional states and empathy. In this short session, we will map the key emotions underlying burnout as a basis for narrative of meaning making. We will practice shamata (attention/grounding) and explore the heart practices of equanimity amid our compassion.
